When first photographing and observing barn owls I was mesmerised by their beauty and amazed to find them on my doorstep in a suburban area. But the more time I spent with them and researching them, the more they began to blur lines.

They have a beautiful ethereal nature of an angel, ghost like qualities, and an evil spirit (if you believe centuries old stories). The exquisite purity of their white plumage as they gracefully emerge from the shadows, often fleetingly, before vanishing in an instant; A deadly ability to kill at will, silently stalking their prey from above; and historically, having a sinister reputation, with famed poets Robert Blair and William Wordsworth considering the barn owl the 'bird of doom' owing to their mind shattering shriek.

One of only two of the UKs truly indigenous deer species (along with Red deer), Roe deer appear an under appreciated deer species. They aren’t seen in the various deer parks around the country and they don’t hold the air of power and majesty of a red stag, or the broad shapely antlers of a fallow. Instead, they are slender, dainty, elegant. Possessing a mystique, always around, but rarely seen.

The first species I truly dedicated time to, they made me see dawn as the world at its purest, free from noise, distraction and unsullied by human disturbance. Their beauty and serenity epitomises dawn, and only adds to the tranquility. They are inquisitive yet fearful, making those moments with them precious and magical.
